A junior high school boy, Taro, who has recently lost his mother, visits his 9rand father's mansion deep in the mountains near Tokyo. Taro has never met his grand father before and when he arrives at the mansion, he finds a great number of maids, but no grandfather.
However, grandfather has left him a message, the upshot of which is that Taro is the new master of the House of Hanaukyo, a shadowy presence with great power and influence over Japanese politics and the economy. The maids are revealed to be a group called gMaiden Hanaukyoh who pledge their loyalty to the master of the house and look after him 24 hours a day.
gThe valet groupg look after their master's daily needs. They do almost everything, help him to change clothes, putting him into the bath and even sleeping together in his bed. Besides the maids and valets there are many other groups such as the "Engineers group which is in charge of developing new machines, the NDefense groupN which is equipped with the weapons as powerful as any army, and the "Information group" which operates "MEMOL", the world's fastest super computer. Mariel is the leader of them all.
When she meets Taro for the first time, she says "I have been waiting for you such a long time. At last you have come." Taro is quite surprised to hear that and he experiences a strange uneasiness. But Taro finds living in the mansion, surrounded by maids to be quite demanding.
